SALT LAKE CITY, Utah --- The University of New Mexico volleyball team played the University of Utah tough, but fell short, losing to the Utes, 33-31, 30-28, 31-29. The Lobos (12-5, 3-2 MWC) played all three games like they have been playing Game Threes in their last two matches, from behind and close at the end.
Game One looked very much like recent Game Threes Utah took a 20-14 lead. Freshman Kelsi Phillips served the Lobos to 20-18. Utah built up another big lead, 25-18, and looked like they were going to coast out of Game One at 29-23. The Lobos got the ball back on an attack error, 29-24, and Sarah Kwasigroch served UNM to an even 29. Junior Jeanne Fairchild got two big kills during the run and also evened the score at 30 on a kill. The Lobos took the lead 31-30 on a Utah error, but the Utes tied it at 31 with a kill. A UNM error and a kill by Whitney Webb gave Utah the 33-31 win.
Game Two saw the Lobos get down early, 10-6, but get back in the game behind the serve of Kelsi Phillips. The Lobos went on a 6-0 run to take a 12-10 lead on a ball-handling error by Utah. The teams stayed close for the rest of Game Two, with neither getting more than a two-point lead. The final tie of the game was at 25, with Utah keeping the lead to the final 30-28.
Game Three was a come-from-behind again as the Utes took a 9-6 lead. The Lobos got the ball back on a kill by Lisa Meeter, 9-7. Meeter held serve, taking UNM on a 5-0 run and the lead, 12-9. The Lobos continued to hold on to the lead, until Utah tied it up at 19. Then it was the Utes turn to take the lead, jumping out to 25-21. Freshman Taylor Hadfield had back-to-back kills and Allie Suiter had a big block to close the gap to 25-24. The Lobos evened the score at 27 on a block by Meeter and Anna Lehne. Lehne came up with a big solo block to give UNM the lead, 28-27, and a kill, 29-28. Utah came up with two kills to take the match in Game Three, 31-29.
Fairchild led the Lobos with 13 kills, while Meeter had eight and Hadfield had seven. Jade Michaelsen had 27 assists and 12 digs, while Phillips and Gayle Tripp had 11 digs each. Lehne led the Lobos with six blocks.
The Lobos continue action Saturday, Oct. 6, at 8 p.m. against No. 23 BYU in Provo, Utah. Please note the time change for Saturday's match.
