"We are excited for the upcoming season. With teams like Texas Tech, Arizona and Georgia coming to The Pit, it will be a terrific season. We are looking forward to having the best fans in the country cheering on the Lobos," said Head Coach Yvonne Sanchez.
Texas Tech, Arizona and Georgia highlight the home schedule for UNM. The Lobos will be in The Pit 19 times, including two exhibitions in 2012-13. That includes eleven home dates before Christmas.
The team is led by head coach Yvonne Sanchez. The Albuquerque native enters her second season at the helm of the program after spending the previous eleven seasons as an assistant coach on Coach Don Flanagan's staff. Sanchez led the program to a historic run through the MWC Tournament last season. The Lobos became the first-ever seventh seed to defeat a second-seeded team. They would later defeat Boise State to become the first seventh-seeded team to advance to the championship game in tournament history.
The 2012-13 team returns nine members from last year's squad. The senior class includes Jayme Jackson, Jourdan Erskine and Caroline Durbin. Durbin was second in the conference in scoring last season and became the program's first-ever First Team Academic All-American. The senior class is joined by a host of Lobos hailing from around the Land of Enchantment. Five members of this year's roster are from New Mexico with three of those being Albuquerque natives.
This year's staff has some familiar faces. Head Coach Yvonne Sanchez, Assistant Coach Anthony Turner and Director of Operations Dave Shoemate return to the Lobo bench. The trio of coaches has combined for nearly three decades of coaching at the University of New Mexico. Video coordinator, and former UNM standout Amy Beggin, also returns for the 2012-13 season. New additions to this year's staff include former Arizona State head coach Joseph Anders. Anders, who brings over 25 years of coaching experience to the Duke City, is reunited with Yvonne Sanchez. The two were assistant coaches together at New Mexico State from 1993-1999. Also joining the UNM coaching staff this year is former Texas All-American Edwina Brown. The former ESPN.com Player of the Year was the third overall pick of the 2000 WNBA Draft. Brown enters her second season as a collegiate coach after spending last season on the Longhorns' staff.
The season will begin with a pair of exhibitions in The Pit against Northern New Mexico and Eastern New Mexico on October 30th and November 3rd. The season opener versus Northern Arizona will be at 7 p.m. (MT) on Friday, November 9th in The Pit.
Fans are invited to the annual Lobo Howl. It will be held on Friday, October 12th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. inside The Pit with free admission. Gates will open at 6 with the women's team taking the court from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The men's team will be on the court from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.
