Albuquerque, N.M. ---New Mexico women's basketball play-by-play announcer Joe Behrend has been named the 2011 Division I Radio Play-by-Play Sportscaster of the Year by the New Mexico Broadcasters Association. This marks the third consecutive year he has received the NMBA award and the sixth time in his career.
Behrend calls University of New Mexico women's basketball games for Learfield Sports on the Lobo Radio Network which includes KNML-Sports Radio 610 AM in Albuquerque. He has done college football, basketball, & baseball play-by-play at various points in his 20 year sports broadcasting career which began in 1981. Behrend was recognized, along with other NMBA award winners, at the 60th annual NMBA Awards Banquet at the Albuquerque Marriott Uptown on June 10th, 2011.
Prior to his time with the Lobos, he hosted a morning sports show while working for KFLS in Klamath Falls, Ore. during his two-year stint there. He went on to graduate from the University of Arizona in 1985 with a degree in Radio and TV, and a minor in business.
Joe has been an active figure on the New Mexico sports scene since 1989. He served as a spotter for long time Lobo broadcaster Mike Roberts during the 1989 UNM football season. Only a few months later Behrend went on to begin his own broadcasting career in New Mexico doing play-by-play for former Lobo and NFL player Randy Rich at KLYT radio. In addition to his work calling Lobo women's games, he has also called a number of UNM men's basketball and baseball games over the years.
He has co-hosted UNM football pre-game shows for News Radio 770 KKOB. He has also called numerous high school football, basketball, and baseball games in New Mexico. His sports broadcasting career doing play-by-play now spans over 20 years while working at stations in South Dakota, Minnesota, Oregon, Arizona, and New Mexico.
