ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico women's basketball team will open the home slate of Mountain West Conference play on Thursday against San Diego State. The Lobos enter the contest 2-1 in conference and 10-6 overall, while the Aztecs bring a 1-2 MWC record and are 6-10 on the season. Tip-off is set for 7:05 PM Thursday night at The Pit.
TONIGHT'S GAME: Tonight's game features the Lobos of the University of New Mexico against the Aztecs of San Diego State University in a Mountain West Conference game.
SCOUTING THE LOBOS: The Lobos enter tonight's game after a tough loss at Utah on Sunday. UNM is currently 10-6 on the season and 2-1 in the MWC with losses to No. 3 Texas, Villanova, South Carolina, San Francisco and Arizona and wins over Southern Cal, Cal State Fullerton, Youngstown State, Texas Southern, Tennessee State, New Mexico State, New Mexico Highlands, Air Force and BYU. The Lobos are led in scoring and rebounding by junior forward Lindsey Arndt with 10.4 ppg and 7.7 rpg. Following Arndt is junior Mandi Moore and senior Melissa Forest with 8.3 and 8.1 ppg, respectively. Leading UNM in assists is Moore with 3.2 apg.
SCOUTING THE AZTECS: San Diego State is coming off their first conference win of the season over Colorado State. The Aztecs are currently 6-10 overall and 1-2 in the MWC with wins over Nevada, Cal State Fullerton, Cal-Irvine, Washington State and Texas Pan Am and losses to St. Mary's, Cal State Northridge, San Diego, SMU, Oral Roberts, UT-Martin, Brown, Santa Clara, UNLV and Wyoming. SDSU is led in scoring by Michelle Elliott at 13.9 ppg. Joining Elliott in double figures is Ashlee Dunlap and Courtney Fritz at 12.0 and 10.3 ppg, respectively. The Aztecs are led on the boards by Dunlap at 9.8 rpg and in assists by Elliott at 2.5 apg.
THE COACHES: UNM is led by head coach Don Flanagan in his ninth season at New Mexico. Flanagan is 178-87 at UNM. The Aztecs are under the direction of Jim Tomey, who is in her second year at San Diego State. Tomey has a record of 15-28 at San Diego State.
THE SERIES: New Mexico and San Diego State will meet for the 27th time tonight. The two team have each won 13 games in their short history. Under Coach Flanagan the Lobos are 13-1 against SDSU and have won seven consecutive over the Aztecs.
