ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The No. 23/25 University of New Mexico will close out the home portion of their non-conference schedule on Thursday night, when they play host to Northern Arizona University. The Lobos enter the game 9-2 on the season, while the Lumberjacks are 7-4 this year. Tip-off from The Pit is scheduled for 7:05 PM and can be heard live on 610 AM The Sports Animal.
TONIGHT'S GAME: Tonight's game features the Lobos of the University of New Mexico playing host to the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona University in a non-conference matchup between two NCAA Tournament teams from last season.
SCOUTING THE LOBOS: New Mexico is 9-2 this season with victories over Florida Atlantic (74-44), No. 25 Texas (63-60), Georgia Southern (64-43), Siena (78-39), New Mexico State (81-47 and 65-45), at Arizona (76-63), Sam Houston State (77-41) and UCLA (72-63) and losses to No. 12/13 Arizona State (67-49) and Nebraska (66-59). UNM is led in scoring by senior Julie Briody at 17.3 ppg and rebounding by junior Dionne Marsh at 6.4 rpg. Leading the Lobos in assists is senior Katie Montgomery at 3.5 apg.
SCOUTING THE LUMBERJACKS: Northern Arizona is 7-4 this year with wins over Western New Mexico (72-32), North Dakota State (55-50 OT), Kent State (75-65), Southern Utah (63-44), Eastern Michigan (89-69), Pacific (74-59) and Loyola Marymount ( 74-58) and losses to Texas-Arlington (69-60), Valparaiso (62-56), Wisconsin-Green Bay (75-64) and Arizona State (85-72). NAU is led in scoring by Alyssa Wahl at 15.1 ppg and rebounding by Laura Dinkins at 7.0 rpg. Leading them in assists is Kim Winkfield at 5.0 apg.
THE COACHES: UNM is led by head coach Don Flanagan who enters his 12th season at New Mexico. Flanagan is 248-106 at UNM. The head coach of Northern Arizona is Laurie Kelly who is in her fourth year at NAU and ninth overall. Kelly is 60-42 as a Lumberjack and 164-80 overall.
