LAS CRUCES, N.M. --- The New Mexico softball team dropped another breaker at New Mexico State Tuesday, 8-7, at the NMSU Softball Complex. The Aggies hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the victory in the Rio Grande Rivalry. Senior Samantha Hughes led the Lobos after going 3-for-4 at the plate. New Mexico fell to 9-20 on the year while NMSU moves to 20-12.
The Aggies took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run by Angie Ortega.
Lobo senior Analise Rubalcava gave UNM a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning. Rubalcava blasted her third homer of the year and picked up two RBI.
NMSU erupted for four runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Aggies pounded out four hits in the inning and capitalized on a Lobo error. New Mexico led 5-2 after three.
The Aggies added two more runs in the home half of the fourth inning on three hits. NMSU extended its lead to 7-2 and look to be in command.
UNM tied the game at 7-7 in top of the seventh inning. The Lobo offense continued to fight its way back into the game but it wouldn't last long.
Tiare Jennings sealed the victory for NMSU in the final inning. Jennings hit a walk-off solo home run and helped the Aggies pull out an 8-7 victory.
Freshman Danielle Castro pitched 4 1/3 innings against the Aggies and took the loss. Castro (2-8) gave up four runs on six hits. Rubalcava pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief allowing four runs on six hits.
Kim Watson threw 6 2/3 innings for NMSU and improved to 9-7 overall. Vanessa Fitzgerald made a brief pitching performance.
The Lobos host Texas State this weekend for a three-game series. The first game in the series is Friday at 7 p.m. MT.
