LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of New Mexico softball team falls 12-11 to UNLV, Sunday afternoon at the Eller Media Stadium. Freshman Stefanie Carramusa went 3-for-5 with three runs, a double, a home run, and an RBI. New Mexico will return home next weekend for an eight-game homestand starting April 15 against BYU at 6 p.m. MT.
New Mexico came out strong in the first inning scoring five runs. With runners on second and third, Katie Gilmore reached on a throwing error by the shortstop to score the first run for the Lobos. Shenise Cox was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With the bases loaded, Jessica Lujan-Dresslar reached on an error by the third baseman to score the second run. With bases still loaded, Cassandra Kalapsa was hit by another pitch to walk in the third run. Erin Brandow hit a sacrifice fly to the right fielder that had a throwing error to score the fourth and fifth run, to end the inning up 5-0.
Carramusa led off the top of the second inning with a home run to left center to score the sixth run for the Lobos. Cox walked and later stole second. Lujan-Dresslar singled down the right field line to score the seventh run.
The Rebels came back with four runs in the first inning and five in the second inning to go ahead 9-7. New Mexico gave up three home runs in the first two innings.
The Lobos scored two more runs in the third inning to tie the game 9-9. Shaunte Duarte walked to start the inning and stole second. Cristin Anderson singled up the middle to score Duarte who got the eighth run for the Lobos. Carramusa reached on a fielder's choice to get on first and later scored on a double by Danielle Castro to tie the game.
New Mexico took the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Cox singled to left field and advanced to second. She later stole third and scored with a sacrifice fly by Lujan-Dresslar to end the inning ahead 10-9.
UNLV tied the game at 10 apiece in the bottom of the fourth with a home run by Jaci Hull.
The game remained tied until the sixth inning when Gilmore singled to right field to get on base. Sheryl Guillermo pinch ran for Gilmore and scored on a double by Kalapsa.
The Rebels took the lead in their last at bat in the bottom of the seventh inning with two runs. UNLV got two walks to put runners on first and second. Tayler Aleman singled to left field to load the bases. Paige Emerson hit in the game winning run with a single to center field to score the runners on second and third and end the game ahead 12-11.
New Mexico was led at the plate by Gilmore going 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Cox went 1-for-2 with three runs, two stolen bases, and a walk. Castro went 3-for-5 with a double, a run and an RBI. Kalapsa and Lujan-Dresslar each went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
UNLV was led at the plate by Ashli Holland who went 3-for-3 with three runs, four RBIs, a walk, a double, and a home run. Alyssa De La Torre, Aleman, and Hull each hit a home run for the Rebels. Jessica O'Connor (11-4) received the win for UNLV in the circle and helped her team improve to 26-14 on the season and 3-0 in Mountain West Conference play.
Kaela DeBroeck received the loss for the Lobos in relief and is now 5-9. New Mexico falls to 10-23 on the season and 0-3 in conference play. For more information regarding Lobo softball go to GoLobos.com.
