TUCSON, Ariz. --- Drew McDonald and Mike Brownstein had two hits each as the University of New Mexico baseball team fell to the No. 23-ranked University of Arizona, 10-4, in the final game of the 2008 series at Jerry Kindall Field in Tucson this afternoon. The Lobos (27-16) return home for a three-game weekend series with No. 16 UC Irvine at Isotopes Park.
McDonald and Brownstein, both graduates of Sahuaro High School in Tucson, combined for four hits, three runs, two RBI, two doubles, a triple and a home run against the Wildcats (27-11) in their hometown.
Brownstein got the Lobos on the board in the first inning, leading off the game with a triple down the left field line. Brownstein scored on a groundout, 1-0, by Brian Cavazos-Galvez, that also advanced Matt Hibbitts to third on the play. Hibbitts was walked and stole second to get into scoring position. Kevin Atkinson traded places with Hibbitts on a triple to right field to give UNM a 2-0 lead.
The Wildcats cut the Lobo lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the first on a single by Brad Glenn to score Bobby Coyle.
UNM picked up another run in the second on a double by Brownstein down the right field line to score McDonald, 3-1.
But the Wildcats but together a four-run third to take a 5-3 lead, started by a two-run home run by T.J. Steele.
McDonald hit a solo home run for the Lobos in the fourth to cut the Wildcat lead to 5-4, but UNM would not get a runner passed first base for the rest of the game.
Will Kerr (2-3) took the loss in just 2.1 innings of work, striking out two, and giving up five runs on eight hits without giving up a walk. Adam Skelton, Daniel Grubbs, Clinton Cox and Ryan Escarcega had brief showings in relief. Corey Burns (2-0) earned the win for Arizona in relief.
