ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico men's golf team could not overcome a ten-stroke deficit and finished second at the 54-hole William H. Tucker Intercollegiate. The Lobos shot a final round of 289 and a 54-hole total of 867 (291, 287, 289) to finish just two strokes behind team champion Arizona State who finished the tournament at 865 (282, 286, 297).
The Lobos were led by Madalitso Muthiya (70, 71, 74=215) who finished tied for fourth at one under par. Jay Reynolds also finished in the top ten tied for eighth at 216 (73, 71, 72). Other New Mexico scores: Jay Choi (74, 73, 72) and Charlie Beljan (76, 72, 71) tied for 17th and Miguel Griego finished tied for 50th with 225 (74, 77, 74).
The New Mexico junior varsity finished 13th with a score of 894 (299, 294, 301). Individually for the New Mexico junior varsity, Ian Medlock won medalist honors with a three round total of 211 (72, 69, 70) to finish five under par. He becomes the second straight player from the University of New Mexico to win the individual title at the Tucker. Other scores for the junior varsity: Jim Anderson finished tied for 80th at 229 (74, 76, 79), Jeff Lanier finished at 231 (79, 74, 78) for 78th and both Tyler Symons (74, 75, 83) and Chase Thomas (79, 79, 74) tied for 82nd with scores of 232.
The University of New Mexico men's golf team will return to action next Friday and Saturday Sept. 19-20 at the Inverness Intercollegiate in Toledo, Ohio.
