ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- New Mexico softball continues Mountain West Conference action this weekend at UNLV and at San Diego State. The Lobos battle the Rebels Friday at 7 p.m. MT before traveling to San Diego to take on the Aztecs Saturday at 7 p.m. MT and Sunday at 2 p.m. MT. The games will be available via gametracker on www.GoLobos.com. New Mexico enters the weekend with a 10-25 overall record and a 1-2 conference mark.
Friday will be the 52nd meeting between UNM and UNLV. The Rebels currently lead the all-time series 29-22 and have won the last six games. UNLV is 23-13 on the year and 0-2 in the MWC. San Diego State swept a pair of games with the Rebels last weekend. However, UNLV is 14-7 at home this year and will try to snap a four-game losing skid this weekend. The Rebels dropped a doubleheader Tuesday at nationally-ranked Arizona State.
Saturday and Sunday will feature the Lobos invading San Diego to take on the Aztecs. SDSU has won seven straight games including a 1-0 victory over UTEP Tuesday night. The Aztecs are 25-13 on the season and 2-0 in league play. SDSU is 15-6 while playing inside the SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs have won four straight against UNM and lead the all-time series 45-26.
New Mexico went 1-2 during the opening weekend of conference play. The only victory for the Lobos came against Utah in the conference opener on a walk-off grand slam by senior Samantha Hughes, 10-7. The grand slam was the second for Hughes in back-to-back weekends. Hughes currently leads New Mexico with a .388 batting average and six home runs.
Hughes along with junior Katie Gilmore has provided major production offensively for the Lobos. Hughes has 23 RBI and 13 stolen bases while Gilmore is second on the team with a .336 average and leads the team with 30 RBI. Hughes and Gilmore combine 53 of the team's 144 RBIs this season.
