ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The University of New Mexico men's tennis team, ranked No. 54, takes a trip to Lincoln, Neb., this weekend for two matches. First, the Lobos battle No. 74 Western Michigan on Nebraska's courts on Saturday at 2 p.m. (MST). Then on Sunday, New Mexico and Nebraska square off.
The Lobos moved from No. 58 to No. 54. New Mexico went 3-1 during a long week that included three matches at the HEB Invitational. The Lobos' record improved to 8-6 this season.
Western Michigan rides in at 10-5 after a 1-2 record at the HEB Invitational. They beat Nebraska but lost to Old Dominion and Middle Tennessee State. The Broncos are 1-5 against nationally ranked opponents this season. New Mexico and Western Michigan will battle for the first time in the history of the two programs.
Nebraska entertains Western Michigan on Friday before playing the Lobos. The Huskers have a 4-7 record overall after dropping five straight matches. One of their losses came at the hands of Western Michigan at the HEB Invitational this past weekend. The Lobos have won all five previous meetings against the Huskers. Last season, New Mexico scored a 5-2 victory for their second win of the season.
Up next, New Mexico hosts six straight home matches for their final home matches of the season. The three final non-conference matches start on March 20 against Old Dominion followed by South Alabama and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in three straight days.
Conference begins on April 4 when Utah comes to town. Air Force and San Diego State come in on April 5 and 6 respectively. Then the Lobos finish conference on the road.
