ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Air Force won for the first time in school history in Albuquerque as the Falcons held off the New Mexico volleyball team in three games (30-16, 30-28, 30-26) Friday night (Oct. 24) at Johnson Arena. UNM now stands at 3-19 (0-8 MWC) for the season, while Air Force improves to 13-9 (3-5 MWC).
Senior Anna Reines (Big Lake, Minn.) led the Lobos with 12 kills while sophomore Chelsea Sondrup (Lindon, Utah) added 11 kills. Junior Monica Meihack (Fallon, Nev.) fueled the offense with 27 assists and junior Adah Burke (Las Cruces, N.M.) produced 10 digs.
Falcon outside hitter Delavane Diaz, who entered the match leading the Mountain West in kills and points, registered a double-double with 17 kills and 11 digs. Kristin Huitt tallied 27 assists and Lamecca Jefferson had 13 kills.
The Falcons controlled the first game, limiting the Lobos to a .094 attack percentage while hitting .424 for the 30-16 win.
Game two was a battle throughout as no team built more than a two-point advantage the entire game. With the game knotted at 26, Air Force ran off two points to go up 28-26. An Anna Reines kill closed the game the one at 28-27, but the teams traded points the rest of the way as Air Force won, 30-28.
The Lobos came out determined in game three, taking an early 5-4 lead and staying out in front until Air Force tied it at 9. The Falcons then built a five-point lead at 17-12 and were up by three-to-four points during the middle portion of the game. With Air Force up 24-20, UNM rattled off four straight points to tie the game at 24. The run wasn't enough, however, as Air Force then went on a 6-2 run to close out the game at 30-26.
The Lobo volleyball program will host the annual Alumni Match tomorrow night (Saturday, Oct. 25) at Johnson Arena, beginning at 7 p.m. Thirteen former Lobos will match up against this year's team in a controlled scrimmage with referees.
