COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - University of New Mexico junior Anthony Fairbanks has been named Mountain West Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week the conference office announced this afternoon. Fairbanks earned his second career Athlete of the Week award after shattering the MWC record in the javelin with a throw of 224' 11" (68.55m) on March 22 in Tempe, Ariz.
Fairbanks broke the MWC all-time record by 2 1/2 feet en route to a second place finish last weekend at Arizona State's Baldy Castillo Invitational. The Albuquerque Highland product improved on his previous best in the event by over seven feet and missed New Mexico's 17-year-old school record by five inches.
The mark, which is a league-best by 17 feet this season, currently ranks fourth in the nation, according to TrackShark.com, and automatically qualifies Fairbanks for the NCAA Regional Championships for a third consecutive season.
