ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- University of New Mexico head coach Jeff Nelson earned his 250th career victory this afternoon as the Lobos beat Northern Colorado, 3-1, in the first session of the Comcast Lobo Invitational. With the win, Nelson is now 250-148 in his 13th season as a collegiate head coach.

"I was really glad to see us get the win," said Nelson. "I thought we ball-handled really well and served well at times."

The Lobos came out strong winning Game One, 30-17. Junior libero Gayle Tripp held serve at two key points in the game to build the UNM lead. Tripp served an ace to put UNM ahead 15-7, followed by three consecutive kills by outside hitter Jeanne Fairchild to build the lead to 18-7.

Game Two saw the Lobos play out of character, losing to UNC, 34-32. The game saw 19 ties and nine lead changes as the teams battled for final control.

New Mexico returned to form in Game Three, winning 30-24. Freshman Lisa Meeter recorded one of her five kills in the game to give the Lobos the lead for good at 18-17.

In Game Four, the Lobos took the lead early and slowing pulled away from Northern Colorado, winning 30-16.

"We went away from our game in Game Two, but then slowly worked back into it," said Nelson. "I was proud of the team for doing that. We just have to come out tonight ready to battle."

Fairchild led the offense with 16 kills, while Meeter added 11 and Kerri Beck had 10. Meeter recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 16 digs. Beck added six blocks at the net.

Earlier in the afternoon, Gonzaga beat Bowling Green, 3-2. Four players recorded double figure kills for the Bulldogs, led by Michelle Boevers with 18.

In the second session Gonzaga will face Northern Colorado at 5:15 p.m., followed by New Mexico vs. Bowling Green at 7:30 p.m.
