Lobo Baseball Honors Nine Seniors on Senior Day, May 15

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico Lobo baseball team will honor the hardwork and dedication of its nine seniors on Saturday, May 15 in a pre-game ceremony beginning at 12:30 p.m. MT before the Lobos host Delaware State. Head coach Ray Birmingham and his staff will congratulate the nine seniors on the accomplishments throughout their years as a Lobo. Seniors Edwin Carl, Adam Courcha, Daniel Gonzalez, Justin Howard, Chris Juarez, Willy Kesler, Jason Oatman, Cameron Smith and Max Willett will be honored for their efforts on and off the field.

Edwin Carl • 6-2/220 • RHP • Farmington, N.M.
Right-handed pitcher, who is a fierce competitor with a hard fastball and a deceiving change-up that has kept him ranked in the top of the Mountain West Conference in the batters struckout looking category... pitched six scoreless innings in two days against then-ranked No. 1 Texas on Feb 19 and 21... he is 5-2 on the season with 39 strikeouts.... born in Farmington, N.M. on Aug. 31, 1988 to Susan and Robert Carl... is majoring in athletic training.

    Adam Courcha • 5-7/170 • 2B • Perth, Australia
    This Lobo is the definition of a "team" player.... in his four seasons as a Lobo he has caught, played all three positions in the outfield and in the infield at third and second base and has made 136 starts in his career... had 12 multi-hit games this season and can lay claim as one of the only hitters in college baseball to have tripled off Washington Nationals prospect Stephen Strasburg... has speed, determination and and a true passion for the game of baseball... born on June 28, 1988 in Gosnells, West Australia to Kim and Jillian Courcha... is majoring in advertising.

    Daniel Gonzalez • 5-11/170 • SS • Mesquite, N.M.
    One of the best fielding shortstops to play the game in a Lobo jersey... his ability at shortstop has been compared to watching Pablo Picasso paint by head coach Ray Birmingham... on April 30 he started his 100th consecutive game at short... on March 13, he had not one but two walk-off hits against Louisiana Tech and had six RBIs on the day... had 16 multi-hit games from the nine hole this season... born on Sept. 1 1988 in Mesquite, N.M. to Ruben and Maria Gonzalez... is majoring in advertising.

    Justin Howard • 6-0/205 • 1B • Ennis, Texas
    One of the best hitters in the nation... he has been top-10 in the NCAA in doubles, hits and batting average throughout the season... had the nation's longest active hitting streak at 27 games and has led the Mountain West Conference in virtually every offensive statistical category all season... set a career-high with six hits and six runs in a single game on April 18 against Coppin State and tied a career-high twice this season with five RBIs and tied a school record with four doubles against San Diego State on May 2... born on August 28, 1987 in Dallas, Texas to Ricky and Vickie Howard... is majoring in University Studies.

    Chris Juarez • 6-1/190 • OF • Lakewood, Colo.
    Has played the outfield this season and made it look easy... he has made several highlight reel catches in the outfield this season... he has also shown that he can get it done with his bat hitting over .400 the majority of the season... hit his first career home run on May 2 against San Diego State and followed it up six days later with a two-run shot in a 3-2 victory over fourth-ranked TCU on May 8... born March 16, 1988 in Englewood, Colo. to Tim and Candace Juarez... is majoring in Communications.

    Willy Kesler • 6-0/215 • RHP • Thornton, Colo.
    Known for his aggressive nature on the mound and scorching fastball... plagued by injury most of his career, he has really turned it on his senior year going 5-1, including three straight decisions and pitchied 28.1 innings without giving up an earned run along that stretch... has pitched three complete games this season and one complete-game shutout on April 25 in a 6-0 win over Air Force in game two of a doubleheader... twice this season he has been named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the week on April 26 and May 10... has been among the leaders in the Mountain West Conference in strikeouts all season... born on Aug. 11, 1987 in Thornton, Colo. to Phil and Joyce Kesler... is majoring in University Studies.

    A great set-up man, a lefty with a mixture of power and control... he has been a fierce competitor out of the bullpen for the Lobos and has a career record of 4-3... was born on Jan. 31, 1988 to Lynn and Myron Oatman in Great Falls, Mont... is majoring in University Studies with a concentration in exercise science.

    Cameron Smith • 5-11/190 • OF • Aurora, Colo.
    A powerful left-handed slugger with speed to match... in his first start this season against Northern Colorado on Feb. 27, he went 2-for-4 with two home runs and two RBIs... has played all three positions in the outfield this season and set a career-high with four RBIs on April 25 in game one against Air Force... was born on June 12, 1988 on Aurora, Colo. to Bob and Jodi Smith... is majoring in University Studies with a concentration in Psychology.

    A two-year captain with a true first step... he has mastered the art of playing the berm in centerfield of Isotopes Park... has started 128 games in the Lobos' outfield... He went 7-for-11, hitting, .636 with two doubles and one triple in a three-game series against top-ranked Texas on Feb. 19-21, earning Mountain West Player of the Week... earned second team All-MWC honors in 2009... born in July 18, 1987 in Denver, Colo to Scott and Nancy Willett... he received his degree in business.
