COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Senior Divan Coetzee was named the Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week today, for his efforts last weekend against conference foes Air Force, UNLV and San Diego State. It is the second time Coetzee has won the honors this season.
Coetzee, from Clanwilliam, South Africa, went undefeated in three singles and doubles matches last week as the 66th-ranked Lobos posted a 3-0 team record in conference play. Ranked No. 27 in the country and competing at No. 1 singles for UNM, he opened the week with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Trevor Johnson of Air Force, followed by a 6-0, 6-1 victory over UNLV's Aviram Saloman (No. 125 in the nation) and a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over No. 71 Felix Hardt of San Diego State. His win over Hardt was the match-winning point for the Lobos. Coetzee also teamed with Hiroud Akhavan to post a 3-0 mark at No. 2 doubles.
Coetzee now has a career record of 92-29 that he has compiled in three short years. Coetzee needs four more wins to tie Pepe Caballero for the most wins in UNM men's tennis history. Caballero, playing from 1995-99, went 96-56 overall.
As long as Coetzee can remain healthy, he will have two regular season matches left and an undetermined number of matches at the Mountain West Conference Championships. Coetzee may also get an invite to the NCAA singles tournament, which he has participated in the last two consecutive years.
Coetzee and the rest of the Lobos complete the regular season this weekend in Salt Lake City, Utah. They will take on Utah, Friday at 2 p.m. followed by BYU, Saturday at 10 a.m. The Mountain West Conference Championships, held in San Diego, Calif., will be April 29 - May 1.
