New Mexico Lobos Softball - At Lobo Field - Mountain West

Sunday: San Diego State 7, New Mexico Lobos 0

Since the slogan "there's no place like home," did not work for the New Mexico Lobos in their three-game Mountain West series with San Diego State, maybe the Lobos are looking forward to their trip to Boise State.

The Broncos, on the road this past weekend at Colorado State, might be looking for that slogan to favor them when the Lobos come to visit Idaho.

The usually hard-hitting Lobos were shut out 7-0 Sunday at Lobo Field by the Aztecs, who completed the three-game sweep to soar to the top of the MW race with a glistening 6-0 mark.

"We have to figure out how to turn things around again," said Lobo Coach Erica Beach. "We have to take the field with the confidence of knowing we are going to win. We have to get back to that mentality."

That series loss hurts even more since the Lobos do not get a chance at payback. The MW softball race packages each team in three-game series against each other. The Lobos travel to Boise State for a trio of games, play host to UNLV and end the season with three games at CSU.

The Lobos drop to 0-3 and head to Boise this coming weekend to play the Broncos. Boise State returns from Fort Collins losing two of three. The Broncos won 11-7 on Sunday to salvage a win in Colorado.

"They have good pitching. They have beaten some good people," said Lobo Coach Erica Beach of the Broncos. "We have to go to their place and it will be a good test for us. It's time for us to step up and win some games.

"We need to recharge the battery and come back refreshed. We need to put this series behind us and come back hard next weekend."

The Aztecs held the Lobos to six hits on Sunday while pounding out 14 hits with three of them clearing the fence. Kayla Jordan hit her first dinger of the season for the Aztecs and teammate Lorena Klopp went long twice.

The Aztecs scored in the second, third, fifth, sixth and seventh inning. The Lobos had only one player, Stefanie Carramusa, with more than one hit as the UNM third baseman went 2-for-4. Chelsea Anaya, Sheryl Guillermo and Jordyn Bledsoe had one hit each.

"San Diego State is playing really good ball right now," said Beach, whose Lobos dropped to 24-16 on the season. "They are in their stride and peaking at the right time. I expected their pitching to be top notch and they have a tough lineup. They are firing on all cylinders. I just expected us to be at that point, too.

"I think we improved throughout the weekend, but we didn't put enough runs on the board and didn't score in this game, which surprised me."

Based on preconference play, the Aztecs, the Lobos and Boise State probably were the frontrunners going into the 2012 MW race. The Aztecs are now in early command with their 6-0 mark. The automatic NCAA bid goes to the MW regular-season champion, since there is no postseason tournament in softball.

The Lobos played well in their preconference slate, but did not play well against SDSU.

"I think they (Lobos) realized how good they can be and they started to push too hard," said Beach. "Maybe the pressure of realizing how good they can be got to them.

"We just need to go out and play hard and have fun and let good things happen for us."
