Coming Up In UNM Skiing ... The Lobos return to RMISA action this week, Feb. 5-7, at the Denver Invitational and RMISA Giant Slalom Qualifier in Winter Park, Colo.
Overall Team Notes ... The Lobos currently rank fourth in the RMISA overall standings heading into the Denver Invitational with 1,508 points. The Alpine team ranks first with 819 points, while the Nordic team ranks fifth with 687 points ... Karin Ohlin became the fourth Lobo to earn 2009 RMISA Skier of the Meet honors. Ohlin earned the women's Alpine honor for her performance at the Colorado/Laura Sharpe Flood Memorial Ski Invitational, which included a 4th-place finish in slalom and a career-best 10th-place finish in giant slalom ... Simon Reissmann, Nikolai Herlofson Finne, and Estelle Pecherand-Charmet received RMISA Skier of the Week honors for the Seawolf and UAA Invitationals.
Men's Alpine Notes ... Freshman Petter Brenna picked up to more wins on Jan. 14 and 16 in the CU men's giant slalom and RMISA slalom qualifier at Eldora Ski Resort. With three wins so far this season, the freshman from Baerum, Norway, is tied for third on the UNM Alpine season wins list and halfway to the career record of six wins held by Stefan Lanzier, Lars Loeseth and Tor Fodnesbergene. Brenna made the most of his collegiate debut by winning the Seawolf men's slalom on Jan. 10 and placing second in the UAA slalom the next day. Earlier in the week he was earning FIS points, a giant slalom win, and three top-10 finishes in four races at the Nor-Am Cup in Sunday River, Maine, site of the 2009 NCAA Championships ... Freshman Nikolai Herlofson Finne finished right behind Brenna in the RMISA men's slalom qualifier on Jan. 16 in second place. In the CU slalom, Finne edged past Brenna for fourth place, a UNM career-best finish. The Asker, Norway native won the UAA men's giant slalom and placed 6th in the slalom to earn RMISA Skier of the Meet honors and go along with two additional top-10 finishes in the Seawolf slalom (5th) and giant slalom (9th) ... Sophomore Thomas Schwab tied his career-best finish with a 5th in the UAA giant slalom ... Junior Olivier Lacaille picked up his first top-20 finish of the season with a 15th-place finish in the CU slalom ... Junior Gary Beresford, who bettered his career-mark with a 25th-place finish in the UAA giant slalom, will miss the rest of the season with a leg injury.
Women's Alpine Notes ... Sophomore Estelle Pecherand-Charmet earned her second win of the season in the RMISA women's slalom qualifer onf Jan. 16. Earlier in the week, the native of Praz Sur Aly, France, placed second in the CU giant slalom. Pecherand-Charmet won the UAA women's slalom and took 3rd in the giant slalom to earn RMISA Skier of the Meet ... Senior Karin Ohlin set a career-best 10th finish in the CU giant slalom, replacing her 11th finish in the UAA giant slalom the previous week. Ohlin earned RMISA Skier of the Meet honors for the CU meet with her career giant slalom mark and 4th-place finish in slalom ... Freshman Jacqueline Hangl recorded top-4 finishes in the Seawolf giant slalom (4th) and UAA slalom (3rd) ... Freshman Stefanie Demetz did well in her debut as well with top-6 finishes in the Seawolf (6th) and UAA (4th) giant slalom. Demetz tied her career-best 4th place finish in the CU giant slalom ... Junior Malin Hemmingsson is finding her way back from a concussion in fall training. The two-year All-American placed 5th in the CU slalom, her third top-10 finish of the season ... Freshman Sofie Hjorth will apply for a medical hardship after tearing an ACL during preseason training.
Men's Nordic Notes ... Simon Reissmann posted his first career collegiate win in the Seawolf men's 15K freestyle race on Jan. 11. The sophomore from Germany posted four top-10 finishes in the Seawolf and UAA Invitationals with a 1st and 2nd in both freestyle races, along with a career-best 4th (Seawolf) and 10th in classical races. His Seawolf combination of finishes earned him RMISA Skier of the Meet ... Sophomore Martin Kaas keeps getting better with each meet in 2009. After having a career-meet in the UAA with 11th-place finishes in the classical and freestyle, Kaas bettered both marks in the CU Invitational with a 7th-place finish in classical and 10th in freestyle ... Junior Tor-Hakon Hellebostad set a career-best in the CU freestyle with a 2nd-place finish, just one week after setting the mark with a 10th-place finish in the Seawolf freestyle ... Senior Rick Grahn set a career-mark with a 20th-place finish in the UAA freestyle ... Senior Casey Dyck picked up two top-30 finishes at the CU Invitational ... Freshman Peter Landl earned his first top-30 finish of the season in the CU classical ... Freshman Christoffer Callesen left the Lobo ski team following the Colorado Invitational to return home to Norway. Callesen was the top finisher for the Lobos in the UAA men's classical in 7th place.
Women's Nordic Notes ... Lobo freshman Ingrid Leask will miss the Denver Invitational this week. Leask is competing for Great Britain in the World Juniors Championships in France ... Junior Polina Ermoshina bounced back from the bug that has been going around to tied her career-mark in the classical with a 2nd-place finish in the UAA race. In the CU classical, Ermoshina was in 2nd place before she fell and dropped down to a 9th-place finish ... Senior Melanie Zemp has recorded five top-20 finishes in six races this season ... Freshmen Ingrid Leask and Svenja Niemeier picked up top-30 finishes in the CU Invitational in classical and freestyle.
