ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The New Mexico softball team swept a doubleheader Saturday against Northern Colorado at Lobo Field. UNM managed an 11-8 victory in game one and pulled out a 1-0 eight-inning thriller in game two. True freshman Chelsea Anaya hit her first collegiate home run in the bottom of the eighth of game two to lift UNM. New Mexico improved to 6-0 at home and 6-3 on the year.
Game one was an offensive fest with both teams combining for 20 hits. UNM jumped out to an early 5-2 lead but Northern Colorado (1-8) came fighting back. The Bears plated five runs in the top of the fourth and held their first lead of the series at 7-5. New Mexico would answer with five runs of its own in the fifth and another in the sixth.
Roswell, N.M., native Madeline Greene got the win for New Mexico in game one. Greene improved to 1-0 on the year after throwing the final four innings.
Game two was a pitchers dual that came down to Anaya's solo homer. Sophomore Kaela DeBroeck got the win for UNM and improved to 3-1. She had nine strikeouts in eight innings of shutout work.
Garcia and Shenise Cox had a pair of hits for the Lobos.
New Mexico returns to action next weekend against nationally-ranked Washington in a three-game series. The Lobos will play a doubleheader Saturday at 3 p.m. MT. The series finale is Sunday at 12 p.m. Gametracker will be available for both games on GoLobos.com.
