ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- University of New Mexico pitcher Stephen Smith recently signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Smith is the third Lobo to join the professional baseball ranks this summer, along with pitcher Bobby LaFromboise and shortstop/pitcher Scott Gracey.

Smith, a senior from Gilbert, Ariz., was 5-2 with a 5.01 ERA for the Lobos in 2008. He started 13 games, most notably the Lobos' 3-2 win over TCU in the Mountain West Conference Tournament that earned UNM its first appearance in the league's tournament championship game and Smith a spot on the MWC All-Tournament Team. Smith was second on the Lobo squad with 58 strikeouts in 73.2 innings pitched.

Smith will play for the Dodgers' Gulf Coast League Rookie team in Vero Beach, Fla.

LaFromboise has reported to the Everett AquaSox, the Short Season Class A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, while Gracey has reported to Dunedin, Fla., to the Toronto Blue Jays' Gulf Coast League Rookie team.
