The University of New Mexico men's golf team finished the third and final round of the 2008 PING Arizona Intercollegiate today tied for ninth overall at 24-over par (292-294-290=876). No. 12 Tennessee won the 16-team event with a three round total of 832 (272-277-283), 20 strokes under par. Junior Steve Saunders shot a 1-under, 70 at the Tucson National Golf Club to lead UNM today.
Saunders finished with a three-round total of 218 (73-75-70) to finish in a tie for 26th in the individual race, five strokes over par. His final round 70 equals his lowest 18-hole score of the season. UCLA's Kevin Chappell won the event at 15-under (67-67-64=198).
Junior Jon Sauer finished with a 74 in his final round today. Backed by 68-69 scores in the first two rounds, Sauer finished at 2-under for the tournament (211), tying for 12th overall. His opening round of 68 was his best 18 holes of the season in a varsity outing. It is his third top-20 of the season and the second time he has finished a tournament under par.
Freshman Tom Carlson finished 10-over (76-75-72=223) in his first tournament as a Lobo. He tied for 49th in the individual race. Senior Robb Bierbaum shot a 74 in the final round to finish tied for 60th at 12-over (76-75-74=225). Junior Dan Saltz shot a final round 76 to tie for 69th at 14-over (75-76-76=227).
Juniors Parker Pemberton and Jacob Lestishen both played as individuals in the event. Pemberton shot a 77 today to finish tied for 54th at 13-over (75-74-77=226). Lestishen finished with an 80 in the third round to shot 20-over for the tournament. He tied for 71st overall (76-77-80=233).
The Lobos next event is the John Burns Intercollegiate at the Leilehua Golf Course in Schofield Barracks, Hawaii on Feb. 20-22.
