LARAMIE, Wyo. -- University of New Mexico sophomore Brian Wilson enters the second day of competition in the Mountain West Conference decathlon in sixth place with 3,236 points. It's the first career decathlon for Wilson, who was a 110-meter hurdles specialist as a freshman. He was eighth in the heptathlon at the MWC Indoor Championships in late February.
Wilson's top performance on Wednesday came in the high jump, where he matched the best mark of the day with a clearance of 6' 2 1/4" (1.89m). The Estancia, N.M. product is 56 points out of fifth place with five events to go, including the 110 hurdles and his top field event, the javelin throw.
New Mexico hasn't scored in the decathlon at the MWC Championships since Dan Feltman won the gold medal in 2005.
