Coming into practice on Monday October 27th, we knew it was going to be a big week for us. We would be traveling to Utah for the weekend and facing again the Utah Utes and the BYU Cougars. The last time that we played them it was bittersweet. We beat BYU in 3, but we lost to Utah in 4. We were not only going out there to seek revenge, but also to try to carry out another sweep, if not two.
The week started out consisting of the routine practice, film watching, and weight lifting. Before we knew it, Tuesday was gone and we were packing our bags to head out to Utah. This trip was especially exciting for me because both my mom and my dad were coming along for the ride. Come Wednesday night, we were settled into our hotel rooms, waiting for what tomorrow would bring.
I could feel the wheels turning inside each and every one of our heads. "We want to win, we want to win, we want to win", but just as quickly as the travel day came, Thursday seemed to come and go even faster. Before we knew it we were sitting in the locker room at Utah after the match wondering how it happened that we were down 3 games to 1... again. The only thing we could do was channel our frustrations towards the Cougars.
The next day was Friday October 31, Halloween. We started it off by eating some breakfast then driving to Provo for an early practice. After practice we drove to an outdoor mall and spent a little time walking around there. Friday night came as quickly as ever and as we all piled up on our beds to watch the BYU Cougars as they hosted the TCU Horned Frogs, we could all feel the excitement rushing through our bodies.
We awoke Saturday morning eager as ever. It felt like the day couldn't have been any longer, but by game time, we were all fired up and ready to go. Personally, it was exciting for me to not only play in the Smith Fieldhouse where my father, John Fairchild, had once played basketball for the Cougars, but it was twice as thrilling because he would be in the crowd watching tonight's game. We ended up beating the cougars in a 3-0 sweep (again) and it felt better than ever.
We went 1-1 on the weekend and now we prepare to host the CSU Rams on Thursday night and the Wyoming Cowgirls on Saturday.
We'll see you at Johnson Center! Go Lobos!!
