PROVO, Utah --- The University of New Mexico volleyball team could not get in a rhythm in Provo on Thursday night, losing to BYU 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-23) in Mountain West Conference action. Sophomore Ashley Rhoades had a team-high 11 kills and hit .588 to lead UNM offensively.
New Mexico was out-hit (.404-.185) and out-blocked (13.0-4.0) over the three sets. BYU built up big leads in the first two sets to take a 2-0 lead into intermission.
In the third set, the Lobos looked like they would pull out a win as the teams battled through 21 ties and seven lead changes. UNM's largest lead of the set was at 3-1 on a block by Jade Michaelsen. The Cougars largest lead during the set was 13-11 on a kill by Nicole Warner. After a BYU error, the teams stayed within one of each other until the final 25-23.
In addition to Rhoades 11 kills, Lobo senior Anna Lehne recorded nine kills and three blocks. Jade Michaelsen had 30 assists to go with two digs and one block, while Allison Buck led the back row defense with 11 digs.
The Lobos (11-6, 3-3 MWC) return to action on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Utah. Game time in Salt Lake City is set for 1 p.m. at Crimson Court.
