ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico women's basketball team will open Mountain West Conference play on Thursday night in Laramie, Wyoming, against the University of Wyoming. The Lobos bring a 10-3 record into the contest, while the Cowgirls are 9-3 on the season. Tip-off from Arena Auditorium is scheduled for 7:00 PM. The conference opener will be televised on the mtn. and can be heard live on 610 AM The Sports Animal.
TONIGHT'S GAME: Tonight's game features the Lobos of the University of New Mexico playing on the road against the Cowgirls of the University of Wyoming in the Mountain West Conference opener.
SCOUTING THE LOBOS: New Mexico is 10-3 this season with victories over Florida Atlantic (74-44), No. 25 Texas (63-60), Georgia Southern (64-43), Siena (78-39), New Mexico State (81-47 and 65-45), at Arizona (76-63), Sam Houston State (77-41), UCLA (72-63) and Northern Arizona (62-51) and losses to No. 12/13 Arizona State (67-49), Nebraska (66-59) and No. 7/8 Oklahoma (80-58). UNM is led in scoring by senior Julie Briody at 17.5 ppg and rebounding by juniors Brandi Kimble and Dionne Marsh at 6.2 rpg. Leading the Lobos in assists is senior Katie Montgomery at 3.2 apg.
SCOUTING THE COWGIRLS: Wyoming is 9-3 on the season with wins over San Francisco (71-58), Northern Colorado (76-46), Colorado (68-49), Charlotte (77-55), Nevada (80-71), Idaho State (79-58), Western State (69-56), Utah State (62-43) and Idaho (68-45) and losses to Kansas State (68-62) and Montana twice (70-59, 79-72). UW is led in scoring, rebounding and assists by Justyna Podziemska at 14.8 ppg, 7.0 rpg and 4.4 apg.
THE COACHES: UNM is led by head coach Don Flanagan who enters his 12th season at New Mexico. Flanagan is 249-107 at UNM. The head coach of Wyoming is Joe Legerski who is in his fourth year at UW and has a record of 57-42.
