SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The heavy-hitting 16th-ranked Oregon State Beavers handed the New Mexico softball team its fourth consecutive loss with a 8-3 win in its second meeting at the Commercial Capital Early Bird Tournament hosted by UC Santa Barbara.
Errors plagued both teams early as each team allowed an unearned run in the first inning. But it in the second inning that the Beavers pulled away. Kelly Petersen doubled to left field, allowing Stephanie Wagoner and Sherina Galvan to score. Lisa Allen capped the inning with a homer to right field that brought in Petersen and Mia Longfellow.
The Lobos slowly chipped away at the 6-1 lead, putting up one run in the bottom of the second and fifth. In the second, sophomore Amy Ray doubled to right center, bringing home classmate Becky Dover. In the fifth, junior Cassie Chavez singled to short, knocking in classmate Kristina Schmallen.
OSU's Adrienne Alo and Brianne McGowan sealed the win, each hitting solo home runs to left center in the seventh.
Senior Ashley Perkins took the loss, throwing an 11-hit complete game, allowing four walks while striking out four. McGowan earned the win, tossing a complete game for seven hits and four strikeouts.
At the plate, Ray left the Lobos going 2-3 with a RBI. Allen was also 2-3 for the Beavers with three RBI and one run scored.
