DENVER, Colo. - Kelli Breidenback and Mariah Johnston each scored a goal for Denver in a 3-1 victory over New Mexico here Friday afternoon at Pioneer Field. True-freshman Jennifer Williams scored the lone goal for UNM but it wasn't enough as the Lobos dropped the season opener to the Pioneers. New Mexico fell to 0-1-0 on the season while DU improved to 1-0-0.
"This was definatley not one of our better performances by our better players," said head coach Kit Vela, "there were some bright spots with some of our younger players. I think that there were a lot of nerves out there. It's the beginning of the season and we have a lot of young players mixed in there. It's a bad start but there were a lot of really good moments that we can build on."
The Lobos rallied late and had opportunities to pull even. In the 85th minute, senior Hannah Hand sent a beautiful cross to Williams who pulled the Lobos within a goal at 2-1. In the 87th minute senior goalkeeper Shannon Adragna made an amazing save only to have it bounce off a Lobo defender for an own goal that put the Pioneers up 3-1. With that assist Hand moved in to a tie for sixth place in the UNM career records with 11 assists all-time.
The Lobos battled during the season opener and took nine shots with two shots on goal. Williams lead the way for New Mexico with three shots and a goal.
The Lobos open a six-game homestand Sunday against Northern Arizona starting at 1 p.m. at the UNM Lobo Soccer Complex. Gametracker and live video will be available for the match on www.GoLobos.com.
