LAS VEGAS - The New Mexico baseball team fell 13-10 at UNLV on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Rebels sweep the Lobos (28-24, 10-9 MWC) in the season series and extend their win streak to eight straight over UNM.
Junior center fielder Matt Foote capped a four-run first for New Mexico with a three-run home run. But UNLV catcher Albert Zerega's three-run homer and second baseman CJ Lang's solo shot in the bottom of the second were part of a five-run inning, putting the Rebels up by two.
UNLV scored two more runs in the third and three in the fifth, extending the Rebels' lead to 10-5.
Junior first baseman Daniel Stovall, junior designated hitter Chris Carlson and sophomore third baseman Ian Hollick all singled and Foote doubled, allowing New Mexico to score five runs, tying the game at 10 in the seventh.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, UNLV got two RBI singles from desginated hitter Chad Miller and right fielder Ryan Bird, giving the Rebels a 12-10 lead. Another two-out single in the eighth, this time from left fielder Keith Smith, added the final Rebel run.
Stovall led the Lobos, going 3-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore second baseman Jordan Pacheco and Carlson also scored two runs for UNM while Foote drove in a team-high five RBI. Smith and third baseman Braden Walker were 3-for-5 with two RBI while Zerega was 2-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored for UNLV.
Junior Damon Miller (2-3) suffered the loss, allowing five hits, two runs, four walks and a strikeout in 2.1 innings. Jabe Beard (4-1) earned the win, throwing 2.2 hitless innings with three strikeouts.
New Mexico wraps up the regular season at home with a three-game series beginning on Thursday at noon vs. TCU. The Lobos and the Horned Frogs also play Friday and Saturday at noon.
