SAN DIEGO STATE vs. NEW MEXICO Saturday, October 23, 2004 University Stadium - Albuquerque, N.M. POSTGAME QUOTES

NEW MEXICO HEAD COACH Rocky Long "I thought our defense played great and our offense played really well in the first half. I thought they [the offense] really struggled in the second half. We made enough plays at the end and I thought the last drive of the game was big by our offense. They had a little momentum going and if they'd gotten the ball back who knows what happens."

(On the difference between the first and last drives of the game and the rest of the game): "I think it was probably execution. We'll have to watch film to find out. In case you guys didn't know, they're the best defensive team in our league so you have to give them some credit too. They have a lot of good football players with a lot of experience. They have nine starting seniors, so they're good. I thought we had them off balance in the first half with a few new formations and a few new plays. They made some adjustments at halftime that really helped them out in the second half. I was disappointed, though, that we had the ball inside their 50 so many times and didn't get any points."

(On Sophomore QB Kole McKamey's first-half play): "I thought Kole played really well in the first half and I thought the whole offense played well in the first half. I thought we were very inconsistent in the second half. We didn't get enough points in the second half. This game shouldn't have been that close."

(On the team's momentum and stretch drive): "I only look one week ahead. Next week's game will be a highly contested game at Colorado State. Colorado State really struggled early and they seem to be on a roll also. I watched them on TV last night against Wyoming and they looked really good. I imagine one team is still going to come away in the hunt and one team is probably not."

SAN DIEGO STATE HEAD COACH TOM CRAFT "I was really impressed with our football team in the second half. We came very close to scoring on that last opportunity. I was really impressed with how hard we played towards the end of the game. We're going to come up against a tough team next weekend (vs. Utah). [New Mexico] has got some injuries, just like we have, but they're not as young as we are. We played eight freshmen on offense tonight."

(on SDSU QB Kevin O'Connell's failed 4th down pass into the end zone late in the fourth quarter and performance in general): "He got it up a little late, but we had the option to throw it for the first down or take a shot at the end zone. Sometimes that's going to happen, but I want to put him in that situation so that he has some options, and when he gets more of those he's going to be a terrific player. He was really resourceful back there tonight. It's not an easy task to get your first start against a New Mexico defense."

NEW MEXICO CORNERBACK Gabriel Fulbright (on the Lobos' defensive effort): "We were just ready. We knew what we had to do. We played defense similar to last week (at UNLV). We just had to come out and work hard. We can't take another loss, it's either win or go home. The defensive effort was tremendous, we had everyone flying around for the ball - safeties, linebackers, linemen - everyone was just playing ball together."

NEW MEXICO QUARTERBACK Kole McKamey (on the offense's performance): " We had a great effort in the first half, but we have to come out and play a complete game. San Diego State came in here with their backs against the wall and we knew it would take a full game to beat them. I've got to give them credit, they played a hard, hard fought game."

(on the Lobo's scoring first): " I think scoring in the first drive sets the mood of the game. It sets the mood for the offense and I think most of all it really gives the defense a lot of spark to come out there and stop them. I think that was big for us to score in that first drive, we did a good job of executing."

NEW MEXICO LINEBACKER Nick Speegle "I thought we played well in the first half but the first drive of the second half, I thought we came out flat. Over all we did well. I think that stop on fourth down (late in the fourth quarter), I think that was characteristic of the whole night."

(on facing a mobile QB in SDSU's Kevin O'Connell): "We just kept playing. The thing that made him scramble was great coverage in the secondary. We'll allow five or six yards on a scramble, which is much better than a 15 to 20 completion. So we'll take that any day."
