The University of New Mexico Alpine Ski team is having a solid preseason, racing in Federation of International Skiers events in Steamboat Springs, Colo. Sophomore Gladys Weidt captured one of two slalom races while freshman Peter Roering finished second in the slalom for the men.

Weidt is a native of Duluth, Minn. and a sophomore on the women's Alpine squad. She qualified for the NCAA Championships as a freshman but did not compete. Last season her best finish in the slalom was ninth place at Montana State. Roering has just joined the Lobos after the fall semester. He should be one of the top skiers on the men's team. The Lobos also welcomed Lars Loeseth to the team following the fall semester. UNM continues its race schedule January 7-10 in Park City, Utah with a pair of FIS slalom and giant slalom races.

The Lobos' collegiate schedule begins on January 11 in Park City with the University of Utah Invite. It is the first Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association event of the season. The Lobos host an RMISA event this year with the Michelobo Invitational on February 6-7 in Taos and Red River, N.M.
