LOBO BASEBALL QUICK HITS

• We really are New Mexico ... The 2012 New Mexico baseball team has 13 players from the state of New Mexico. It is no secret coach Ray Birmingham wants to take local kids all the way to Omaha. Ever since he got to UNM, he has been a big advocate of recruiting the best local talent New Mexico has to offer.

• UNM top 40 in attendance ... The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association released its 10th weekly attendance report of the season and the New Mexico Lobos have come in at No. 37 following their home series against Florida Gulf Coast.

• Record setters ... The Lobos set a new school record when they defeated Florida Gulf Coast 12-6 on Apr. 21. It guaranteed the Lobos their seventh-straight weekend series victory, which broke the record of six-straight set by the 2010 team. The Lobos have defeated No. 22 Gonzaga, San Diego St. (home and away), No. 19 TCU, Air Force, 2008 national champion Fresno St., and Florida Gulf Coast during the streak.

• New Mexico pitching ... On April 14 and 15 against San Diego State, the Lobos trotted out three starting pitchers, each of whom is from New Mexico: Austin House, Albuquerque; Josh Walker, Rio Rancho; Gera Sanchez, Mayfield. This is believed to be the first time in UNM history that the team has started three pitchers from the state of New Mexico in a single weekend series. It is a great testament to the talent to be found in the Land of Enchantment. Each pitcher had an ERA under 4.00 at the time of his start, and the trio have the three lowest ERAs on the team.

• Scouting UNLV ... The Rebels are coming off their first conference series win of the season. They swept Air Force to move into fourth place in the MW. This is a vital position because only the top four teams advance to the conference tournament, which is hosted by UNLV May 24-27. The Rebels are led offensively by senior Trevor Kirk and junior Brandon Bayardi. They are batting .400 and .377 respectively, which ranks second and third in the MW behind only UNM’s DJ Peterson. Bayardi is the main power threat with 15 doubles, seven home runs, 49 RBI, and a .623 slugging percentage, but eight different players have at least two home runs. Their pitching staff is anchored by two freshmen starters, Erick Fredde and Zak Qualls. Fredde is 4-3 with a team-leading 2.69 ERA and has struck out 51 batters in 63.2 innings. Qualls’ 3.47 ERA ranks third on the team and his 4-2 record ties him with Fredde for the team lead in wins. Closer Zack Hartman has six saves, a 2.84 ERA, and 26 strikeouts in only 19 innings.

• Career years ... Four UNM players are currently experiencing career-highs in batting averages in 2012: DJ Peterson (.438), Mitchell Garver (.363), Ben Woodchick (.327), and Trey Porras (.305). Also, four UNM pitchers have career-low ERAs this season: Gera Sanchez (1.69), Austin House (2.63), Alexis Garza (4.97), and Jake McCasland (5.87).

• Comeback kids ... When the Lobos scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Texas Tech 14-13 on Apr. 25, it was the first time UNM had scored at least four runs in the bottom of the ninth and pull out a comeback win since Mar. 18, 2005, when they scored four in the ninth to defeat BYU 6-5.

• Woody on a roll ... Senior Ben Woodchick has at least two hits in six straight games. He his hitting .556 (15-27) over those games, with five runs, five RBI, three doubles, and two stolen bases. He is slugging .667 and has an on-base percentage of .600.

• NATIONAL LEADER ... Senior Gera Sanchez is currently leading the nation in strikeouts per nine innings with 13.28/9. He is one of only two pitchers averaging more than 13 Ks per nine innings. He has struck out at least nine batters in each of his past four starts.

• Another POW award ... Senior Ben Woodchick was named Mountain West Player of the Week for games played from April 16-22. This is the first career win for Woodchick. He batted .500 (10-20) on the week and drove in seven runs with two steals to help the Lobos to a perfect 5-0 record against Texas Tech and Florida Gulf Coast.

• Mountain West honors for the Lobos ... Woodchick’s award has allowed UNM to set a new school record with 10 MW Player/Pitcher of the Week award winners this season. The team had nine winners during the 2000 season.

• Pitching as a team ... As of April 25 the Lobos’ team ERA stands at 4.66, which would be the lowest team ERA UNM has had since producing a 4.13 mark in 1977. The staff is also on pace for 441 strikeouts, which would be the second-most in program history behind only 469 Ks in 1968. Gera Sanchez is leading the way by averaging an NCAA-leading 13.3 K/9.
