ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- Senior captain Rose Morris led the Cherry Team to a 3-1 victory over the Silver in UNM Volleyball's annual Cherry & Silver scrimmage on Saturday afternoon. Cherry beat Silver, 19-25, 25-18, 25-15, 25-20. In the annual Alumni match, the 2009 Lobos beat the graduates, 4-0, 25-17, 25-15, 25-20, 25-14. A four-set match was agreed upon ahead of time.

Cherry & Silver Scrimmage
Morris hit .538 for the match, 14 kills and no errors in 26 attempts. Junior captain Jade Michaelsen led the Cherry with 44 assists, while sophomore libero Allison Buck led the squad with 13 digs.

The Silver took the first set, 25-19, with the help of former Lobo Jeanne Fairchild. Fairchild finished the match with 16 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Amy Wong led the current Silver players with 12 kills, followed by senior middle blocker Anna Lehne with 10 kills. Freshman setter Jordan Russell had 24 assists for Silver, splitting time with student assistant coach and former Lobo Sarah Kwasigroch who had 20. Freshman libero Melissa Rohr led the Silver with 14 digs.

Cherry bounced back from the 1-0 deficit, taking the last three sets for the win.

Alumni Match
Sophomore Ashley Rhoades led the Lobos with 10 kills, followed by Morris and juniors Lisa Meeter and Taylor Hadfield with eight kills each. The Alumnae were led by former Lobo All-American Jeanne Fairchild (2006-08) with 14 and Vanessa Shields (1999-2002) with nine.

"It was a really good day of competition," said Lobo head coach Jeff Nelson. "The key early in the match was strong serving and passing. Lisa (Meeter) and Allison (Buck) had a great passing game. It was a great opportunity to get everyone on the court so that they will be ready for the regular season."

It looked like the graduates might steal the third set away from the current Lobos. The '09 team was up 23-12 before the alumnae cut the lead to 23-17. Meeter picked up a kill to push the lead to 24-17, but Shields had two kills and Fairchild cut the lead to 24-20. Hadfield put the set away with a kill.

Said Nelson: "We tried some new things in the third and fourth sets, like a new lineup, and the team handled the changes well. We have a more balanced offense this season with more options."

The Lobos begin the 2009 regular season by hosting Delaware, Portland State and UC Santa Barbara in the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic on Aug. 28-29. Friday's schedule is Portland State vs. UC Santa Barbara at 5 p.m., followed by UNM vs. Delaware at 7:30 p.m.
