SALT LAKE CITY, Utah --- The New Mexico softball team was beat 5-2 Friday at Utah. The Lobos scored two runs on four hits, but made three costly miscues. The Utes hit a grand slam and a solo homer to cruise to the victory. New Mexico dropped its second straight and will close out the season Saturday at 1 p.m. The Lobos are 12-35 overall and 3-11 in the Mountain West Conference. Utah jumped to 22-30 and 4-9 in conference play.
Utah's Kara Foster gave the Utes an early 4-0 lead in the first inning after belting a grand slam. Foster picked up her four RBIs after UNM starter Danielle Castro walked three straight batters to open the game.
Lobo senior Samantha Hughes helped UNM get on the board in the fourth inning. Hughes doubled to left center and eventually scored on a run-scoring single by Shaunte Duarte. UNM trailed 4-1 heading into the fifth inning.
Utah added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Whitney Holm belted a solo homer to left center field and gave the Utes a 5-1 lead.
UNM scored its final run on an Erin Brandow homer. Brandow hit a shot to left that left the yard. It was her third long ball of the season.
New Mexico will battle Utah Saturday in the regular-season finale. The game is slated to start at 1 p.m. and will be available via GameTracker on GoLobos.com.
