NEWARK, Del. - The New Mexico volleyball team defeated George Washington, 3-1, Friday afternoon in the first match of the Delaware Invitational. The Lobos improved to 3-1 for the season and will play host Delaware later today at 5 p.m. MDT.
The Lobos edged the Colonials (0-5) in game one, 33-31, but dominated game two with a 30-17 thrashing while hitting .500 (16K-2E-28TA). UNM fell in game three, 30-26, before taking game four, 30-25.
Sophomore Kelly Therkelsen led the Lobo offense with a career-high 25 kills while hitting .512 (25K-4E-41TA). Junior Nicole Ryan put down 15 kills and freshman Samie Weber collected 13 kills for the Lobo offense that hit .305 (74K-23E-167TA) during the match. Senior Monica Meihack paced the offense with 52 assists and a career-high eight kills.
Senior Adah Burke, playing in her first match of the season, tallied a career-high 25 digs to lead the defensive effort. The Lobos limited the Colonials to a .172 attack percentage.
After playing Delaware tonight, the Lobos will close out action in the Delaware Invitational Saturday, Sept. 11 at 10 a.m. MDT vs. Albany.
