WACO, Texas --- New Mexico (2-3) softball made four errors and only had three hits against Baylor (3-2) Friday night and dropped a 5-0 decision to the hometown Bears. Whitney Canion threw a complete game shutout against the Lobos and had 12 strikeouts. Lobo senior Samantha Hughes went 2-for-3 in the game with a double. New Mexico split a pair of games Friday on the first day of the Getterman Classic.
"Both of our pitchers threw really well today," said Lobo head coach Ty Singleton. "Our defense is a lot better than we played tonight. Without the errors, we were right there with a very tough Baylor team. I'm encouraged by our effort and we faced a dominate left-hander tonight. This was the first time our newcomers have played in a big time environment like this and there are a lot of positives we can take from today."
The Lobos had a great scoring opportunity in the first inning when Hughes led off with a double. Hughes hit a shot into the left field gap and UNM had a runner in scoring position. As quickly as she gave her team a spark it was taken away when she was picked off at second base. Freshman Jessica Garcia followed Hughes with a walk but a sacrifice bunt and a ground out ended the inning.
Baylor struck first with two-runs in the second inning. The Bears had two hits in the inning and took advantage of a critical error by the Lobo defense.
Baylor scored three runs in the fifth inning on one hit and three more Lobo errors. The Bears were led by Nicole Wesley who went 2-for-2 in the game with two stolen bases.
Hughes had a double and a single. Freshman Jessica Lujan-Dresslar had the only other hit for New Mexico.
Freshman Danielle Castro took the loss for the Lobos after giving up five runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings. Senior Analise Rubalcava came on in relief and pitched the final 1 2/3 innings allowing only one hit.
New Mexico continues the Getterman Classic Saturday with two games. The first game against Northwestern State (La.) will be played at 9 a.m. while game two against Stephen F. Austin will be played at 2:30 p.m. MT. Gametracker will be available for the Northwestern State game but no live scoring will be available for the SFA game.
