LAS CRUCES, N.M.--The University of New Mexico women's soccer squad took down New Mexico State 4-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Lobos handed the NMSU their first loss inside Aggie Memorial Stadium this season.
Senior midfielder Jael Fanning provided an offensive spark for New Mexico, scoring one goal and serving up two assists. Fanning was the first Lobo to find the back of the net off a cross from Roxie McFarland on the left edge of the box in the 25th minute.
Three minutes later, another point was added to the scoreboard for the Lobos as the Aggies suffered a defensive blunder, and the ball entered the goal.
In the second half, the Lobo Brianna Webster converted a Fanning free kick into a goal in the 66th minute, increasing the New Mexico lead to 3-0. In the 78th minute, UNM added another score when Fanning once again provided an assist as Rachel Montoya shot past the Aggie keeper from 15-yards out on the left side of the field.
The Lobo defense prevented NMSU from taking a single shot on goal and limited the Aggies to five shots in 90 minutes of action.
New Mexico tallied 15 shots during the match, forcing the NMSU keeper to make five saves, four of which came in the first half.
UNM will travel to San Diego State on Friday, September 30 as the Lobos open MW competition at 5 p.m.
