NEW MEXICO HEAD COACH Ritchie McKay
"I thought our guys really prepared hard this week and certainly it was evident in our defensive effort. We played a really good team and defensively we were solid against them from start to finish. Our bench, even those guys who didn't get in, were critically important to our week of practice. I am proud of every man and hopefully we can build upon this effort."
UTAH HEAD COACH RICK MAJERUS
(On UNM junior forward Danny Granger): " Granger's a great player, I've said that before and I give him a lot of credit. He's a phenomenal talent and is a combination of (former Lobos) Clayton Shields and Kenny Thomas. He's probably the best player I've seen in my career playing New Mexico, which is a long time."
(On the game): " It was a combination of Granger's great talent, some mismatch problems and some youth and inexperience problems. All those problems came together for us this afternoon. New Mexico came out with great purpose and tenacity. They played a terrific game and stuck it to us."
NEW MEXICO JUNIOR FORWARD Alfred Neale
(On trying to control the defensive boards): Coach was stressing that a lot. I know I had to go out there and help the big men on the boards. We've been working hard on it this week and focusing on defense in practice. I tried to let what we did in practice carry over to the game.
NEW MEXICO JUNIOR FORWARD Danny Granger
(On the turnaround from the Air Force game): I don't know if you would call it a turnaround. We played a couple of good teams. We had a really intense week of practice. Coach McKay really put it into our heads to get back on the right track and make a race for this championship.
(On the defensive effort): In the beginning of the year, we were playing such good defense that we got complacent. Then Air Force came in here and beat us down. That flicked the light back on in our head and told us how we have to play every night if we want to win in the Mountain West Conference.
NEW MEXICO SOPHOMORE FORWARD David Chiotti
(On Danny playing the point position at times during the game): He is a tough match-up because a big guy can't guard him out there. They're not used to playing that position and guarding guys out there. He's great at it and it really helped out team win today.
