ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- University of New Mexico men's tennis began its only home tournament this fall and won every match on the first day. Junior Miles Bugby, junior Derek Lynch, who took last year off, and freshman Joe Wood all got a chance to play on their home court.
The day started with doubles giving Lynch and Wood a chance to play on the same side of the court. In the first round of the doubles, Lynch and Wood won against Kollman Gearhart and Greg Werner from Northern Colorado (8-4). The second round of the day came against Eric Schroeder and Jakub Szmanski from Glendale Community College in Arizona. Lynch and Wood won the match 8-2.
Lynch got to preview Schroeder in the first match of the singles draw. Lynch won the match in two sets (6-2, 6-3). In the second round, Lynch beat Chris Toli from the New Mexico Military Institute (6-3, 6-0). Wood met up with Austin Francis from Air Force in the first round and won 7-6, 6-1. Round two, Wood defeated Vinnie Fallico from Northern Colorado (6-1, 6-1). Bugby, who did not play doubles, had a first round bye in singles. In round two he drew Johnny Buckingham from Air Force. Bugby won his only match of the day (6-1, 6-0).
The players return to action Saturday (Oct. 6) morning at 9 a.m.
