SAN DIEGO - University of New Mexico sophomore Sandy Fortner flew out of the gates on the opening day of competition in the women's heptathlon on Wednesday afternoon at the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Fortner smashed her personal record in the first event, the 100-meter hurdles, and won the shot put to finish the day in second place overall with 3,131 points. Colorado State junior Emily Pearson was the leader through four events with a score of 3,293.

Slowed by injuries much of the year, Fortner got off to a tremendous start with a time of 14.48 (3rd) in the 100 hurdles. The time was a remarkable 0.34 seconds faster than her previous career best, which she recorded last year.

The Fort Sumner, N.M. product dropped to fifth after the high jump (5' 3 ¼" - 1.61m), but made her way back up the standings with a victory in the shot put. Fortner's mark of 38' 5 ½" (11.72m) was nearly a foot better than the rest of the field.

She capped the day with a career-best time of 25.64 in the 200 meters, which was good for third in the event.

Fifth in the MWC heptathlon last year, Fortner will compete in the long jump, javelin and 800 meters this afternoon at the San Diego State Sports Deck.

Utah senior Amanda Feight is currently third with 3,086 points, while SDSU sophomore Kristin Olafsdottir is fourth with 3,049 points.

The NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the event is 5,050 points. Fortner's career-best is a score of 5,190, set at the 2006 MWC Championships.
