ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The New Mexico volleyball team held its first official practices of the preseason Wednesday morning and again in the afternoon at the auxiliary gym at Johnson Center.
Head coach Jeff Nelson, who enters his fifth season at the helm of the Lobos, returns nine letterwinners, including three starters from last year's team. He also inherits a fine crop of very talented freshman in Cara Fisher, Hannah Johnson, Elsa Krieg, Megan Short and Jayla Trombley. All of whom, Nelson has repeatedly said could potentially see time on the court this season.
“In terms of leadership,” Nelson said, “we have things in place with our three seniors.”
Now that practice has begun, the Lobos’ sights are set on claiming the Mountain West volleyball crown. Never has there been a better time for UNM to make a push for the MW championship, as they are playing host to the MW tournament at Johnson Center Nov. 18-20.
“We wanted very much to host the tournament,” Nelson said. “Our players love playing at Johnson Center, and it’s something our fans can really enjoy as well.”
The Lobos will carry on on with two-a-day practices throughout the week and will continue to grind up until the season opener against South Florida, which takes place at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 28 at Johnson Center as part of the MCM Elegante Tournament.
Before the season opener, the Lobos will hold their annual alumni match, which is set to take place at 7 p.m. on Aug. 20 in Johnson Center. Admission to the alumni match is free to the public.
