COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--- The University of New Mexico has been selected second in the preseason coaches' poll, announced yesterday by the Mountain West. The Lobos are prepared to open the 2011 season with a strong presence on the field, as the 2010 MW Offensive Player of the Year Jennifer Williams and MW Defensive Player of the Year Kelli Cornell return to lead the squad, under the guidance of MW Coach of the Year Kit Vela.

Last season, New Mexico earned its first Mountain West regular-season championship by posting a 5-0-2 mark in Conference play. The Lobos finished the 2010 campaign with a 12-3-5 record and made their first-ever postseason appearance with an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Aztecs collected 34 points and four first-place votes to secure the top spot in the poll. New Mexico followed in second place with 33 points and three first-place votes. UNLV and TCU were picked to finish third and fourth with 24 and 20 points, respectively. Wyoming was predicted to finish fifth (15 points), while Boise State (14 points) and Air Force (7 points) rounded out the preseason rankings.

All seven MW women's soccer teams will begin regular-season competition on Aug. 19. New Mexico is set to host Saint Mary's at 7.m. at the UNM Soccer Complex on this date.

The Lobos begin their MWC Championship quest with an exhibition against TTU this Saturday, August 13, 2011 at noon. For more information visit www.GoLobos.com
