The University of New Mexico women's soccer team was picked sixth today in the Mountain West Conference preseason poll voted on by the league coaches. New Mexico is coming off its third consecutive winning season and was picked ahead of Wyoming and Air Force. Defending MWC tournament champion BYU was picked to win the league over last seasons regular-season champion UNLV. Picking up the third spot was San Diego State followed by Utah and TCU.
"After last year's disappointment, if I were a coach outside our team I would probably put us there as well," said UNM head coach Kit Vela. "I have confidence in our players that we will come together fast and have a better finish than sixth. Every time we have been picked sixth or seventh we finish second or third. What matters is where we finish at the end of the season."
The Lobos are currently going through training camp as they prepare for the 2008 season opener on August 22 at Denver. UNM has seven returning starters and 16 newcomers entering the new season. The Lobos finished last season with an 8-5-4 record while going 2-3-2 in MWC play. New Mexico will kick off MWC conference play when they travel to TCU on Oct. 5.
