Men Off To Great Start At ITA Regional Championships

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The New Mexico men's tennis team had a successful start to the 2003 ITA Mountain Regional Championships, Wednesday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the UNLV campus. The Lobos won four of five singles matches and doubles matches along with three singles byes.

Senior Jasmin Hodzic won his first match against Idaho's Fabian Dummett, 6-3; 6-1. Hodzic will face Stan Nevolovich of Montana Thursday at 8 a.m.

Sophomore Henry Gers also won his opening match, 6-1; 6-4, over Spencer Marchant of Weber State. Gers will face the tournament's No. 22 seeded Marek Dvorak, representing Colorado. Classmate Nick Ames fell in his opening match to Northern Arizona's Thibault Schram, 6-2; 6-4.

Freshmen Robert Grzeskowiak and Hiroud Akhavan got their first taste of regional action and came away with victories. Akhavan, seeded No. 27 in the tournament, slid past Montana's Gus Treyz, 7-6; 6-1. He will face Denver's Victor Zetterholm in the next round. Grzeskowiak pulled off the 6-0, 6-0 sweep over Montana State's Cameron Mayo. He will face the tournament's No. 12 seeded Jan Steenekamp of Montana.

Senior Divan Coetzee, seeded No. 2, and juniors David Kowalski and Ryan Stotland, seeded No. 7 and 11, respectively, all drew byes in the first round. In the round of 64, Coetzee will face Northern Arizona's Jonas Jegers while Kowalski takes on UNLV's Milos Blagojevic and Stotland squares off against Montana State's Tejeshwata Chigateri.

In doubles action, the No. 1 seeded tandem of Kowalski and Stotland, drawing a bye in the first round, netted an 8-4 win over Idaho's Hector Mucharrez and Seth Banks in the round of 32. Kowalski and Stotland will take on Mountain West Conference foe Utah's Tomasz Grzyb and Jason Yap in the round of 16.

Third seeded Coetzee and Akhavan, also receiving a bye in the first round, downed Colorado's Peter Bjork and Elliott Quibell, 8-6. They face 11th seeded Jose Lechuga and Nima Roshan of BYU next.

Seeded No. 10, the tandem of Gers and Hodzic look to carry their two-match win streak into Thursday's action when they take on the No. 7 seeded Nejc Smole and Viktor Zetterholm of Denver. Gers and Hodzic downed Idaho State's Kapil Desai and Pablo Garces 8-1 to advance to the round of 16.

Ames teamed with Grzeskowiak to fall to his second 11th seeded opponent of the day in Lechuga and Roshan. The duo lost 8-5 after getting a 9-8 win in the first round over Denver's Jason Tan and Brian West.

Singles second and third round action continues in Las Vegas all day Thursday. Competition starts at 8 a.m. P.S.T. and concludes around at 9 p.m. P.S.T. Doubles will resume on Friday. Complete results are available above and New Mexico results are available below.
