SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The San Diego State softball team took both games of a doubleheader from New Mexico (26-22) today SDSU Field. The Aztecs held on for a 3-2 win in game one and downed the Lobos 8-2 in game two.
In game one, San Diego State and Cori Janelli (8-8) won the pitching dual against junior Ashley Perkins and sophomore Iraina Ogas. Janelli earned the win behind her two-hit performance over four innings. Janelli allowed two hits, two runs, one walk and two strikeouts. Ogas suffered the loss, falling to 7-3 on the season after giving up four hits, three earned runs, one walk and one strikeout over 2.1 innings.
Perkins started the game for New Mexico, going 3.2 innings with just one hit and one walk allowed. Celena Velasquez pitched in relief for the Aztecs, throwing three innings with just one hits allowed while striking out four.
Kelcy Murphy started the scoring with her home run to left center in the second inning. She then singled up the middle one inning later, scoring Janna Kovensky and Erin Mahoney.
In game two, San Diego came out swinging to get on the board first again. Bianca Cruz grounded out but gave Joann Figueroa enough time to scoot home. Senior Sabrina Sandberg evened the score half an inning later with her solo shot to left in the third.
Figueroa put the Aztecs up again in the bottom of the third with her single to center that scored Kovensky. Bree Boyer then reached on an error by Chavez allowing Figueroa and Murphy to score, making the lead 4-1.
Ogas battled back in the fourth, singling through the right side, bringing home Kennedy. But San Diego State wouldn't stop, scoring four more runs in the bottom of the fourth off of three singles and one error.
Senior Amy Dumas dropped to 7-12 on the season with her four-hit loss. Dumas pitched 2.2 innings for two earned runs and two walks. Perkins tossed 0.2 innings for three hits, four earned runs and one walk while Ogas threw 2.2 innings with just one hit allowed and three strikeouts.
Velasquez improved to 11-4 on the season with the win. She pitched 3.1 innings, giving up just one hit and striking out one. Leanna Richards pitched 3.2 innings of relief for three hits, two earned runs, one walk and two strikeouts.
The Lobos play their first home conference games of the season this weekend. They host Utah for a doubleheader on Friday, April 16 at 1 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, April 17 at 1 p.m. against BYU.
