There is good news for Lobo fans planning to enter The Lobo Football Tailgate Cook-Off Challenge this Saturday prior to UNM's Mountain West battle with the Utah Utes. Last week's winner, Donna Winward, says she will not enter.
"When I first saw the list (on GoLobos.com), I thought chili would be the easiest to be the most unique," said Winward, 53. "I'm not sure what I would do with a hamburger."
The culinary challenge for Lobos on Saturday is hamburgers and brats. What's the big deal, Donna? You mush in some blue cheese, sprinkle in some green chili, mash in an onion, pound in some pepper and garlic, don't overcook it, and you got a gold-ribbon burger. A brat you just brown & serve.
The contest begins at 3 p.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. The entry booth is located on the North side of University Stadium (Gate 8) next to the KKOB/Budweiser Tailgate Show booth. The contest is priced exactly right. It's free. It's sponsored by Albertsons, Pepsi and Route 66 Casino & Hotel.
The weekly winner gets a night's stay at Route 66, a $50 gift certificate to 66's Thunder Road Steakhouse, and a case of Pepsi. Winward says she'll probably use her room the night of a concert. "I think they have the best indoor concert facility in the area," she said.
Winward wasn't the only winner last Saturday. The three runners-up each week get a Lobo Çar Flag, a Lobo Car Magnet, a Lobo Tailgate Chair and a 12-pack of Pepsi. The first 20 contest entries get two tickets to a Lobo Olympic Sports event of their choice.
Here's the culinary order and challenges for the rest of the UNM home games:
--Sept. 18 vs. Utah -- hamburgers & brats
--Oct. 2 vs. UTEP -- Ribs
--Oct. 23 vs. San Diego State -- brisket
--Nov. 6 vs. Wyoming -- green chili stew
--Nov. 27 vs. TCU -- chicken/turkey or any poultry.
9-18 -- Hamburgers & Brats
10-2 -- Ribs
10-23 -- Brisket
11-6 -- Green Chili Stew
11- 27 -- Chicken/Poultry.
GoLobos.com wants to quiet any rumors that "a ringer" won the contest last week. Winward owns and runs "The Perfect Cup", but it's a coffee and pastry shop. Winward doesn't do the cooking, but she does make a mean cup of coffee.
If coffee is ever on the Tailgate Challenge list, we have a ringer!
"I'm a long-time season-ticket holder and a long-time fan," said Winward. "I love to cook and I knew I would be at the game, so I thought I would be fun to try and come up with a winning chili."
Winward's chili was a tantalizing, tongue-teasing blend of turkey, sausage, green chili, onions, bell pepper, pinto beans, black beans and kidney beans. Her chili was hot and her tailgate area was cool.
"It was Texas chili with a New Mexico flair," she said. "I was just throwing in a little of this and a little of that."
