Parkes Named MWC Men's Tennis Player of the Week

Colorado Springs, Colo. - University of New Mexico senior Johnny Parkes was named the Mountain West Conference men's tennis player of the week today.

Parkes went a combined 4-0 last week, helping No. 44 New Mexico to dual-match wins over No. 60 UC Santa Barbara (7-0) and Oregon (5-2). Playing at the No. 1 position in singles, Parkes downed UC Santa Barbara's Phillip Therp in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) and Marcos Verdasco of Oregon (6-3, 6-0), also in straight sets.

In doubles play, Parkes teamed with Miles Bugby for a 9-8 (7-4) victory over UCSB's Therp and Scott Hohenstein and an 8-5 win over Oregon's Verdasco and Alexander Cornelissen.

Parkes, who is also a three-time all-MWC honoree, ranks ninth on the all-time UNM singles list with a career record of 82-41. In doubles play, he sits at 16th with a 65-41 record.

This is Parkes' second MWC Player of the Week honor on the season and third in his career. He picked up the honor on Jan. 28, 2009, as well as March 26, 2008.

The Lobos (5-1) square off with No. 48 Denver on Friday, Feb. 13, at 7:30 p.m.
