ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The New Mexico men's tennis team (9-5) won the state bragging rights with their 5-2 win over New Mexico State today in Las Cruces, N.M.

Senior Divan Coetzee won his singles match at No. 1, 6-2, 6-2, over Ben Archer-Clowes. Coetzee now has a career record of 89-29 that he has compiled in three short years. Coetzee needs six more wins to tie Pepe Caballero for the most wins in UNM men's tennis history. Caballero, playing from 1995-99, went 95-58 overall.

Coetzee is also on track to break the single season record for wins. He is currently 30-9 overall and 12-4 at No. 1 singles. The current record is held by Matt Amgwerd, who won 34 singles matches in the 1999-00 season.

As long as Coetzee can remain healthy, he will have five regular season matches left and an undetermined number of matches at the Mountain West Conference Championships. Coetzee may also get an invite to the NCAA singles tournament, which he has participated in the last two consecutive years.

Also winning at New Mexico State, sophomore Henry Gers won his sixth consecutive match, beating Stjepan Beg 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. Freshman Hiroud Akhavan netted a 6-4, 7-6 win in the fifth spot over Christian Halligan while senior Jasmin Hodzic beat Tyler Lyon 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.

The Lobos claimed the doubles point with their No. 1 and No. 2 doubles tandems' wins. At No. 1, juniors David Kowalski and Ryan Stotland defeated Lyon and Archer-Clowes, 8-5. Coetzee and Akhavan won at No. 2, 8-6, over Danilo Zivanovic and Luis Avila.

New Mexico opens conference play next weekend as it hosts Air Force, UNLV, and San Diego State. The Lobos take on the Falcons April 9 at 2 p.m. followed by the Rebels on April 10 at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 11 will be senior day for Coetzee and Hodzic as they host the Aztecs at 1 p.m.
