AUSTIN, Texas - Sophomore Jennifer Williams scored her seventh goal and fifth gamewinner of the season to lead the Lobos over Texas, 1-0 today. New Mexico earned its first win over Texas and first win in Austin. The Lobos remain undefeated at 7-0-2 on the season. The Longhorns fall to 3-5-0 on the season.
"Texas is an outstanding team," said head coach Kit Vela. "They are young and they are going to be dangerous when it comes to conference time. But I'm real proud of our girls. They played hard for 90 minutes and never let down. It was a total team effort and I'm real proud of the girls for the heart they showed out there today."
New Mexico is now outscoring opponents 17-3.
Williams took a ball from senior Jess Quador and redirected the ball to the far post for the gamewinner.
The goal was Williams seventh of the season and puts her in a tie for sixth place all-time for goals in a single season. Williams also has 18 total points, which puts her in a tie for seventh place all-time at UNM for points in a single season. Williams now has 11 career goals and puts her in a tie for seventh place all-time at UNM for goals in a career. The gamewinner was Williams fifth of the season and puts her in a tie for second place all-time for gamewinners in a season. It was also Williams' sixth of her career which puts her in a tie for third place all-time at UNM with current Lobo junior Alexis Ball.
The assist was Quador's first in a Lobo uniform.
Redshirt freshman Kelli Cornell remains perfect on the season with a 7-0-2 record. The win put Cornell in a tie for seventh place all-time at UNM for wins in a single season. The San Clemente, Calif., native picked up her seventh shutout of the season and puts her in a tie for fourth place all-time at UNM for shutouts in a single season.
