ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico women's basketball team will close finals week with a tough test against the Arizona Wildcats. The Lobos are currently 6-3 coming off a win Sunday against New Mexico State, while the 7-2 Wildcats put a six game winning streak on the line. This will be the fifth year in a row the two teams have met and the 12th meeting overall. Tip-off is set for Saturday at 7:05 PM, at University Arena.
SCOUTING THE LOBOS: The Lobos are coming off a win against interstate rival New Mexico State. UNM is currently 6-3 with losses to Villanova, South Carolina and San Francisco and wins over Southern Cal, Cal State Fullerton, Youngstown State, Texas Southern and Tennessee State. The Lobos are led in scoring and rebounding by junior forward Lindsey Arndt with 10. 8 ppg and 8.6 rpg. Following Arndt is junior Mandi Moore and senior Melissa Forest with 8.0 and 7.3 ppg, respectively. Leading UNM in assists is Moore with 3.8 apg.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS: The University of Arizona is currently 7-2 on the season and have won six in a row. U of A has garnered wins over Northern Arizona, Navy, Hawaii, UMass, American, BYU and Texas State, with their lone losses coming to then No. 16 UC Santa Barbara and Virginia. The Wildcats are led by preseason Wooden and Wade Trophy candidate Shawntinice Polk who is averaging 17.0 ppg. and 7.6 rpg. Also in double figures for Arizona is Dee-Dee Wheeler at 15.7 and Aimee Grzyb at 10.9.
THE COACHES: UNM is led by head coach Don Flanagan in his ninth season at New Mexico. Flanagan is 174-84 at UNM. The Wildcats are led by Joan Bonvicini in her 13th season at Arizona and 25th overall. Bonvicini is 221-141 at U of A and 546-212 overall.
