ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Former University of New Mexico baseball great Dr. James Economides, who attended UNM from 1954-57, will be inducted into the UNM Hall of Honor on Sept. 29. Economides will enter the hall with six other Lobo standouts. The announcement of the honorees was made at a press conference at The Pit on Aug. 23.

The six other members that will join Economides, as announced by the UNM Alumni Lettermen's Association, include: Alan Dils and Loren Dils (Tennis), Nao Ikeda (Volleyball), Ron Jacobsen (Wrestling), Guy Wimberly (Golf), and Jack McFarland (Posthumous - Football, Basketball, Track & Field).

Economides and the other six honorees will officially be inducted at the Hall of Honor dinner on Sept. 29 at The Pit.

“It is the neatest feeling ever,” Economides said about his induction. “Everyone that I am associated with in UNM athletics has been very kind and it’s really made me feel good.”

Economides had a stellar career while at UNM. His list of accomplishments speaks for itself. In 1956 he was named the Skyline Conference Batting Champion and slugging champion; two feats that helped New Mexico win the conference championship that same year. He also made the all-conference first team and was named an All-American in 1957.

Baseball wasn’t the only sport Economides excelled at. He was also an incredible handball player. During his time participating in competitive handball, Economides racked up four world championships, 17 national championships and 38 state and regional championships.

Even though it’s been a little over 60 years since Economides last played baseball for UNM, he still takes the time to follow the Lobos’ program. He is very excited at the direction that UNM baseball is heading in.

“He has done a heck of a job and has really turned things around,” Economides said in reference to UNM head baseball coach Ray Birmingham. “He just won the conference championship.”

Love for the UNM baseball program runs deep for Economides as is evident by the way he has kept up with the team’s performance over the years. Sept. 29 will certainly be a great day for Economides and for UNM baseball.

Tickets for the Hall of Honor dinner are $50 each or $500 for a table. Call the UNM Alumni Lettermen's Association at 925-5905 for more information. The awards dinner will be held on Thursday, September 29 at 6 p.m. at The Pit Club Level.
